It has worked for a while and now has stopped. I cannot dim the GE switches or bulbs now…Funny how things change in four days.
I think they keep trying to fix the dimming issues and then turning them back off due to injected new bugs… etc.
I’m having this problem with the go control 2gig WD500Z-1 Z-Wave Wall Dimmer i just installed.
Hopefully there will be a fix forthcoming, because having the light come on at 10% when i’m out to get a drink of water in the middle of the night is one of the best features for home automation. Had this with my old insteon set up, but chose to move to zwave… so hoping that wasnt a mistake.

So I’m not totally sure how to correctly share apps via this forum, but to solve this problem (for bulbs at least) I have built an app that solves my use case with dimmers.
Specifically I have GE bulbs where the dim level doesn’t work. This app will allow you to turn on bulbs on motion, at a set dimmer level, and turns them off after a set number of minutes without motion. Supports specifying modes and setting to run in sunset/sunrise boundaries
App : Turn On Dimmed Bulb With Motion
Repo : https://github.com/piguy54/SmartThingsPublic
Todo list :
Mode selection - Done
Time selection (after sunset before sunrise) - Done
Other options for when to use the triggers.
I’ll look at adding these in the next 24-48 hours. If you have additional requests, please let me know I’ll work on them as I can.
I don’t have a dimmer switch, so if you do, I can send you a small app you can run so we can figure out if anything needs to change to support those as well.
I’ve put in a pull request for the current version and will update with a new pull request once the todo’s are done.
I was playing around with my new lowes motion sensor last night using the smartthings motion/temp device type. I wanted to see the difference between running local and cloud. In my bathroom now I’m using an aeon multisensor with a custom device type, turn on and set level with smartlighting works perfect. When I switched to the lowes motion it doesn’t set the level. It seems that using the smartthings device type and running locally is the issue. This is with a ge dimmer as well.
Thanks for this. Dimming appears to be a continuing problem. Could you send me the app you mention for dimmers? Your app doesn’t seem to be working for me.Thanks!
Actually, looking at the logs, the initial problem seems to be that no motion is being detected. The app is able to turn off the light after the timeout period.
I’m still plagued by this problem after multiple months now, and it’s driving me crazy. I also have GE dimmer switches that when triggered by motion do not have their level set. SmartThings support just says they’re still working on it.
Here’s the crazy workaround I figured out for it in case anyone is interested: V2 Issue with “turn on and set level” not actually setting dim level (crazy workaround inside!)
I now use rule machine for this
…
if device is not already on
and there is motion
and time is sundown + 1 hour till 6 am
turn light on 15%
on false turn off with 2 minute delay cancelable.
Great! That works. I am sort of a noob when it comes to ST and this app is new to me. Appears very flexible. Will likely use it in several places.
Thanks again.
I do use smartlighting still as rule machine runs in the cloud where smartlighting runs locally so will still work if hub is down or network issues…
But for dimming since it doesn’t work in smartlight I use as I described above.
Thanks again. I agree it would be better to have a local service. Interesting that at this point in ST development still pushed to rule machine or IFTTT if we want anything beyond the most basic triggers. Hopefully that will come sooner or later.
Thanks for the suggestion - rule machine does work around this. I hate that it won’t run locally, though. I think I’ve gotten used to my local light automations running just a bit faster, so going back to a cloud-based one is slightly noticeable to me. Oh well, at least it works.
Still no ETA on this fix?
Affected so far is:
- GE Dimmers
- GE Link Bulbs
- 2GIG Dimmers
- Linear Dimmers
- Evolve Dimmers
- Lutron Dimmers
That’s pretty much everything. This really sucks, the big hype for v2 was local processing. Most of us install dimmers in every case possible. That said, this bug makes v2 sort of worthless.
There doesn’t seem to be much movement. I really hope everyone reading this thread opens a ticket.
Hi Folks,
Just wanted to chime in and say that I am also experiencing this same problem. I’ve got a GE Dimmer with smart lighting set to turn on and set level when turning on the light to different levels based on mode. So for example, if the house is in:
Day: 80%
Dawn & Dusk: 50%
Night: 10%
The rules all do run upon activating the light, but the level always stays to whatever I set last manually via the thing interface. So it looks like I’m in the same boat as everyone else. Hopefully they’re working on a fix for this. One question I had though: If you develop your own smart app, do you have control over whether not it will be run locally vs in the cloud? I’m an engineer professionally and would consider tackling writing a smart app to run locally if it’s possible. I’ll try to dig further into their developer documentation to learn more? But was curious if anyone has already played with it.
I’ll throw my voice into the mix and say I’m having the same issue as others on the thread. Please fix! Is there a technical reason that is making this difficult to fix? For the meantime, going to try SmartRules as a workaround.
They’ll just mark it as solved and close it. (#133647)
Yep, here you go.
The reality here is if the community of user developers didn’t exist this platform would be dead in its tracks. This is core functionality, ST is riding the backs of it’s customers to bridge the gap. I work in this business, there isn’t an ETA because we (the users) have created our own workaround which allows them to continue to de-prirotize these types of fixes. If we didn’t have a workaround the monkey would be squarely on ST’s shoulders and they’d had it fixed back in September.
That said, all of us are to blame for this. We can stop developing on our end until they fix critical issues or we can continue to whine about broken functionality because we bailed them out with some janky fix. The former probably won’t happen so the latter will continue to persist.
I will no longer contribute solutions of any kind to this community until ST gets their crap together and stops taking advantage of us. The same actions from a few critical folks would send a good message especially as they onboard new users who will add to the chorus.

Hi Glen,
Unfortunately I don’t have an ETA to offer on this. I know it’s frustrating, and I apologize for the trouble. Please bear with us though, SmartThings is working on it, I promise.
Best Regards,

What is the estimated ETA? Can you give me a projected month? Quarter? Year?(!).
Per the SmartThings community this has been an issue since at least September. Most people install dimmers, if I can’t dim it’s fairly useless the me.
This is a critical bug. Not sure why it’s not a higher priority.

Hello Glen,
Thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately this is a known issue that our developers are working on implementing a fix for. I’ve tagged your account to receive automatic notification once there is a solution for it. Until then, my apologies for any inconvenience this is causing, and thank you for your patience.
Best Regards,

Hello,
There seems to be a bug with the SmartLighting App which ignores set level requests when creating lighting automations. Lighting triggered by motion or other actions doesn’t dim to the requested level defined in the automation created.
Devices affected so far:
GE Dimmers
GE Link Bulbs
Lutron Dimmers
Evolve Dimmers
2Gig Dimmers
Linear Dimmers
Thanks,
-Glen M.
For what it’s worth, a relative of mine bought a whole pile of the OSRAM smart bulbs. They dim flawlessly via Smart Lighting with and without motion triggers.
I watched in complete awe as they dimmed with out hesitation. So frustrating…
