[DISCONTINUED] Blink Camera Device Handler/SmartApp

And you wonder why… This is why the better half of the past year was spent building in safe guards into the code and the servers. I’m still pushing them to open up the API but statements like these don’t exactly inspire confidence in the community.

If you’re going to quote me on something like that, at least include the full quote instead of taking it out of context…

Kevin - Thanks for your help. Until yesterday I had been using your DTH and Smartapp and everything was working great. I also sent an email to blink reiterating what has been stated on this thread. Thanks again and hopefully something can get worked out with Blink for SmartThings integration.

They’re not forcing anyone to do anything. It’s a person’s choice. Use the integration - don’t use the integration - they don’t care. This is not a cheap hobby to begin with, so $35 (lifetime) is pittance compared to what I have invested. I pay Ring, I’d pay Blink (for cloud storage - they can’t always count on new sales for a growth model, which is why they’ve likely entered the security market). I pay for other things too, provided I find value in it, I have no problems with it.

And therein lies the problem. You said leak - it could also be stolen. Which again is why this model doesn’t work. This is why the only secure way is for ST to perform the integration and conceal the code (just like many of their other integrations). I like what @rboy has done and I like what you have done. I have paid for access to @rboy’s code for other things (including Blink).

The issue is misuse/abuse. This is how Blink chose to mitigate the problem. Do I agree? No, but it’s their solution. Is it reasonable? Sure.

Other than successfully lobbying Blink for an open or even a licensed API (which would likely incur a cost), misstating that Blink is forcing people does not help, and talk of leaks don’t help. I do understand your points, but they don’t help in obtaining a real solution that you’re hoping to achieve. You need try and engage Blink in conversation. If they choose to not allow you access, then you know. Hopefully they listen.

Hi Kevin,
I’ve followed your instruction to the letter, but there is no camera listed when I Add Camera under step 4.
I can see the SmartApp just fine though.
The camera is already active in the Blink app. I’ve tried disconnecting and adding it from ST.
I’ve also tried deleting the DTH and SmartApps published codes and starting over.
I should mention that this is a new kit, and I don’t have the 1min video recording option because I haven’t received the latest update yet(not sure if there is a way to force the update). Maybe that’s a factor?

EDIT: Logs below. I’ve tried removing special characters from my password.

Micky,

Blink has closed or at least changed their OAuth method so it probably won’t work. Kevin has no way of knowing the new method (trial error) since it’s not shared with anyone.

You can email Blink to lobby for API support - this is what I received from them today, so perhaps it’ll be done soon.

“We are currently working on releasing third party integration per customer feedback.”

Thanks! I admit I read the previous posts only after I posted my message! sheepish smile

I contacted Blink didn’t really get a satisfactory answer.

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for your frustration; however, this is the only way that we currently integrate with SmartThings. As you may know, we have recently become integrated with Alexa and IFTTT due to the high demand for integration with these platforms. We will continue to select any potential future integrations based on demand and its importance to our customers relative to other highly demanded features.

With regards to opening our API, this is under consideration for the future.

Best regards,
The Blink Team

If they’re integrated with IFTTT, there’s a chance I’ll be able to workaround this and get the SmartApp back online. I’ll look into it over the weekend…

Edit: I looked and there’s nothing I can do.

I hope you do. Your DTH is the reason I bought Blink in the first place. Felt like the rug was pulled from under our feet.

I’m on the mailing list, but I didn’t know about the IFTTT Intergration until I received the reply from Blink. I’ve sent several messages including some screenshots from the forum and at the time they seem unwilling to provide a valid explanation for why this is happening. As much as I do want the new outdoor version (Blink XT) I will be canceling my pre-order. I really like Blink and want them to be successful, but this kinda makes me angry :rage: honestly. I bought the smartthings hub based on the FREE DH/SA. What really pisses me off when I contact them they give me a weak ass answer.

I contacted them too and just received this as the response:

The Blink Team replied:

Hi Kevin!

Thanks for your support of Blink! We are in the process of disabling all unofficial 3rd party integrations. We have recently released IFTTT support and encourage all users to use that to integrate their connected devices with their Blink system. This announcement is coming next week.

Best,
The Blink Team

This is the response I got from Blink:

Thank you for contacting Blink. I’m sorry that you’re running into this issue. Unfortunately, we had to disable unofficial 3rd party integrations. These integrations were causing major issues on our servers as they were not coded properly, and were causing downtime for our users. We have implemented IFTTT support, which you could then integrate with SmartThings. The link to our IFTTT applet is located below. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Can you post that link

That’s a reasonable answer and that I can completely understand. I was probably part of the problem :hushed:. I had some CoRE Pistons that were polling very frequently to get individual cameras to arm/disarm based on SHM. Makes sense know that I think about it, wish I had known.

But what is to stop you from doing the same thing with the “official” paid version of the app?

We have built in protections to identify runaway/overload situations at multiple levels.

Good question, I was starting to feel bad , now I don’t know what to think

I’m not knocking your app, I’m sure it’s good, but why would I pay you instead of Blink or ST for intergration with my hub. I do believe you are reputable after doing some research, but me personally I only want to use the one Blink DH/SA and really don’t have a need for the others. Seems like a lot to pay for ST Intergration. I really don’t get it.
