I had seen this but to me an āofficialā product is one that is provided from the vendor and free of charge not through a third party. I cannot say I agree or support the idea of paying for content on an open platform that was built around and for community.
Thanks for explaining - that makes sense. I felt silly even saying anything because it wasnāt a big deal and I found a way to get it to update. I just wanted to at least offer some feedback and contribution in case it was in error and would help keep things rolling.

Is anyone else having problems with Blink cameras responding in SmartThings? Been having problems over the last day and I am not able to get them to sync. The Android app for Blink works fine. SmartThngs just wont sync with it.

Iām not sure if this is related, but something happened this week thatās been causing really strange behavior with devices. Pulling the batteries from the hub and unplugging it for 15-30 seconds fixed the other problems so you may want to give that a shot.
Kevin, I saw over on the other Bllnk thread that there was a possible change in Blink servers, and the Blink Manager was changed to accommodate that. Do you have to do the same?
Blink hasnāt publicly released the specifications to their API. One of the users mentioned in the first post of this topic somehow figured out the url and basic functionality and from there I was able to figure out some additional functionality.
Rboy is the only person that Blink is willing to share that information with, which makes absolutely no sense to me since he doesnāt release any of his code for free.
I just checked my logs and mine isnāt working either. If the urls to their servers changed, I have know way of determining what they changed to so I have no way of fixing this.
I highly recommend contacting Blink and letting them know that youāre not happy about having to pay for a device handler in order to use Blink with SmartThings. Maybe if enough users complain theyāll be willing to share their API specs with my so I can write a fully functional and FREE device handler for Blink Integration.

I just published a new version of the SmartApp that has a āDisable SmartAppā setting at the top of the main screen.
If you enable it, the application will stop trying to contact Blink which will prevent it from throwing a bunch of exceptions.
Kevin, Blink is in the process of shutting down/blocking access to all non approved third party apps. A key issue for them has been the (ab)use by a few users which has resulted in spamming of their servers and even causing service disruption.
I donāt know if/when they will reenable access. Weāre working with them to put more safe guards in place to protect their infrastructure and hopefully they will reverse their decision in time and possibly even open up the APIās.
My 2 cents on this, this problem isnāt unique to Blink, even SmartThings has been grappling with this. Iāve had to put safe guards in my other apps on request from ST staff to protect against potential abuse. In many cases this was not intentional, weāve seen cases where rules get stuck or malformed rules cause apps to spam the server multiple times a second indefinitely. For folks who remember MyQ had a similar issue last year, not an easy problem to solve.
I just donāt get why Blink is forcing the SmartThings community to pay you when there are other developers willing to work with them to create a free integration.
Send in your request to them to open up the APIās.
I donāt see why I should have to pay another $35 to use Blink in SmartThings. If they donāt open up the API I think it is time to move on from Blink.Imagine if every hardware company does this. Maybe this is something ST should take up with Blink.
Abuse has been an issue with a lot of things for a long time (MyQ, ecobee, etc). Many people want real time updates for devices and therefore set devices to poll using extremely short time increments. I understand the concern. ST has been considerably more stable as of late (a few issues here or there, but better), anyway, people would create redundant tasks to try and beat the reliability into ST while unintentionally becoming a source point for the stability issues. This had to have added considerable overhead (hopefully they have removed them as stability has improved, but I doubt it).
Unfortunately, IMO, the way to fix the abuse issue would be for ST to incorporate these integrations themselves, sidestepping the third-party. This isnāt feasible or reasonable in any legitimate timeframe. For ecobee, I have zero issues with the ST integration. Itās not as full featured, but it does everything I need it to do. Some integrations use watchdogs to keep it working, but I donāt even need them with the official integration. MyQ will never happen officially - besides abuse/rate limiting, they do not want garage doors automated for safety reasons. Blink doesnāt (at this point) charge for their cloud. If they did, then maybe the infrastructure would be more robust and could handle the extra load.
Itās a tough spot for everyone.
I do agree that steps have to be taken to fix the access abuse. I do not have a problem with that. But for Blink to force us to pay an additional $35 to use Blink on Smartthings is unacceptable, in my opinion.Kevin had a very viable solution, and now he is locked on. This is not a business model I want to support.
The part that I donāt understand is that from what Iāve heard, if you pay rboy, you get access to the code, but you still have to manually copy and paste it into the IDE.
If thatās the case, all of that information is still publicly exposed so how does that solve the problem for Blink?
If they gave me the specs, explain the limits that needed to be followed, and I changed the code so that itās free to use, but canāt be shared or modified, how is that any different from what theyāre allowing rboy to do?
I think a large part of the problem Blink is experiencing from users āabusingā their system is that theyāve never provided any information on how to correctly use it so people have had to use trial and error to figure out something that works.
I think this is how Blink is trying to balance both sides. And you are right, they are still exposed. But thatās why the only way to fix it (as said above) is to officially integrate and not expose the code (i.e. the Ring integration, etc.). The problem with exposing the code is you and I (and others) can go in a defeat the safeguards.
I just donāt get how Blink can justify forcing users to pay a community member for something that doesnāt solve any of their problems.
Itās only a matter of time before someone leaks the information needed to get the integration working again and theyāre right back to where they started. (Iām NOT asking anyone to do that because it would violate the license, Iām just saying itās only a matter of time before someone does it anyways)
I contacted Blink before I wrote this SmartApp explaining that I wanted to create a free integration, but they responded saying they havenāt made their API public.
Blink has a push feature which could drastically reduce the amount of traffic to their servers, but by not providing the details, the only way I could detect motion is to poll the cameras every 5 minutes while theyāre armed.
Providing the specs to a developer thatās willing to create an integration for free and follow all the guidelines they want to enforce would completely solve their problem because no one would need to come up with their own rogue solution.
Iām just hoping that everyone that agrees with this will contact Blink and complain because maybe if enough users do that Blink will be willing to work with another community member thatās not just out to make a profit.
