[OBSOLETE] Cooper Aspire Scene Controller RFWC5 and RFWC5D Device Handler [beta release]

Try resetting the device per the manual:

"ERASING SCENES:
A scene can be over written by following the steps defined above. The new scene will simply replace
the old scene.
The RFWC5 can also be reset such that no buttons are programmed with the following steps.

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 and 5 until all LED’s begin to blink. Release buttons 1, and 5.
  2. Now press and release the All OFF button to complete the Reset of the RFWC5.
  3. The LED’s will stop blinking when the RFWC5 reset is complete.
NOTE: The pressing of any other button while the RFWC5 is in the ready-to-reset mode will cause the
RFWC5 to come out of the reset mode. This feature helps prevent inadvertent erasure."

Then reconfigure via ST.
Sorry for the late response I’ve been out of town.

@sainsworth,
Hi Scott, I have a slightly different model RFWDC (about half a dozen of these at my home). I’m investigating whether I can migrate my Vera setup to ST (I’m a ST newbie). I installed your DH but can’t even pair the devices with ST. I put them to inclusion mode, they start blinking as if being configured, but ST stays in the “Looking” state. I tried resetting, excluding (ST confirms that device got excluded) but the device never shows up anywhere, not in the graph.api either. Any thoughts on how to proceed?
Thanks,
– Sergey

I have a very specific device ID in the DH. It may be that the yours is slightly different. That said, they should still add to ST as a z-wave device and show up in your IDE.

Are you the sure the devices and the Hub are the same region/frequency?

If you can get it to add in. Compare the raw description to the one below. If it is different. Send it to me and I can add it to the DH.

Raw Description zw:L type:0202 mfr:001A prod:574D model:0000 ver:1.13 zwv:2.78 lib:01 cc:87,77,86,22,2D,85,72,21,70

Scott, many thanks for your reply. After yesterday’s ST auto-update I was suddenly able to add my Cooper keypad. Its description differs only in “ver” (2.00 vs. 1.13).

Raw Description:
zw:L type:0202 mfr:001A prod:574D model:0000 ver:2.00 zwv:2.78 lib:01 cc:87,77,86,22,2D,85,72,21,70

I’ve used this controller previously with homeseer so following for my upcoming ST install.

I’m lost. I have the RFWC5 controller, and can’t figure out how to define the scene. If i create a scene in ST, can i simply link the scene ID to the switch? How do I determine what the scene ID is for the ST scenes.

CB

So first, you have to understand that SmartThings Scenes are not Zwave Scenes. Heck, classic ST scenes are different from newapp scenes, and neither are ZWave scenes… But I digress. This controller is designed as a ZWave Scene controller so it can either address ZWave scene capable devices by scene ID or address Zwave devices directly.

If all of your things in a scene are ZWave, and scene capable, you can use something like ZWave tweaker to assign them to a scene (if the device handler doesn’t already allow it, like most GE/Jascos and I think Inovelli switches) OR you can input the zwave IDs of all of the devices you want to control in direct device control (find the ZWave node id in the IDE).

If not everything is ZWave - probably more likely… To access ST scenes, you’ll need something that can capture the button presses and convert the logic to activate the scene you want. Webcore can do this in a roundabout sort of way.

No it’s not easy, but when it works it’s amazing, I have a bank of 6 Somfy/Graber (Zebra) blinds I control with mine using direct device control. That means even when ST is down, my blinds still work.

I’m a bit new to this… After reading Viks section and the repsonses, I managed to get the buttons on the wall to do exactly what I wanted, but I must have something wrong in my ST app on my phone because I don’t have any “buttons” in that scene controller device. In the new app it simply says “checking status” and I can’t click on the main tile for the device. In the old app it let’s me click through to the device, but only shows the “Configure Scenes” button and says “IND 00000” in the main area.

Shouldn’t there be a list of “buttons” in the app to run each of the 5 scenes?

No buttons will show up in the app. That is not a function that the Cooper supports. It is a controller. You cannot send a command to control it. The buttons will show up in an app like SmartLighting or webCoRE to allow you to control other devices through ST.

The IND display will show you which indicators are on and there are commands that will control the indicators.

An example of how this is used would be simulating a 3 way switch. Use ST and webCoRE to set the indicator match the state of the light it controls. Then if someone turns on the light by its switch or through ST the Cooper controller will be able to turn it off with one button push.

Hope that helps.

I’ve ran into an issue with Cooper Aspire Scene Controller and my ST again. I moved my ST hub from my old home to my new home and i was very excited to get these new Cooper Aspire Scene Controller to work/use but i couldn’t get them to work anymore. I ended up installing 8 of these at different place in my new house, upon programming the first 4, I couldn’t get any of them to work. Not sure what i have done wrong here. To my knowledge, I’ve used the same DH and same ST hub. I end up resetting my Hub once at my new place to start things from scratch as i had left all my previous switches and keypads at my old place. New Cooper KP’s and new zooz switches are installed here at my new place; however ST hub is the same. Attached are my screen shots. I’m really hoping that you guys can again find errors and help me get back on track, else i’m screwed(none of my switches are installed on the same floor so really need these KP’s to work via association.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Vik
Your set up looks correct.

  1. I would try the configure scenes button in the app again. This process takes several minutes to complete. Watch the log. Wait. If it does not work you will likely need to factory reset the controller and start over with it. I’ve locked mine up a few times during the programming and had to reset it.
  2. If you are using the button presses with ST to trigger things you may want to consider assigning unique scene numbers to each button in the house. By default the DH uses 251 thru 255. The DH uses the scene number received to determine which button was pushed. I’ve not really tested what happens when multiple controllers have the same scene numbers. It may or may not be an issue.

FYI I recently installed my 4th controller and it is controlling via association new zooz switches. Seems to work fine so your basic set up should work.

My newest install does show the child devices. It must be something to do with new app changes. Eventually I 'll have to figure out how to make this work with the new app.

For factory reset: Hold buttons 1 and 5 until the indicators blink Then the all off button.

sounds good @sainsworth and thanks for the feedback… i had factory reset first 4 cooper KP’s few days ago, but i will try again.
You have suggested above that “If it does not work you will likely need to factory reset the controller and start over with it” you mean to say i should factory reset my ST hub?
what is "ds the ST app, hit …scenes button,? what is “DS”? sorry.

Im very stressed out as i really need these cooper KP’s to work via association else i’ll be in big trouble. i really liked the on/off button feature via association as i cannot gain this via configuring scenes.

i will try above suggestions later tonight once i go home. i’ll keep you posted. Thanks again for you prompt reply.

I replied and quoted a previous post the forum software shrinks it and you have to click it to expand. The sentence is truncated “Edit the fields the ST app, hit save,”

No I was referring to resetting the coopers. You would have to remove and re-add them to the hub.

How far away are the zooz switches from the cooper controller? I do believe that z-wave association is a one hop function. In other words the devices need to be in direct radio range of each other. The ones I recently set up are all in the same bathroom so they are close together.

I’m not sure why it its not working. However, if you can’t get it working you could buy one of these: https://www.ebay.com/i/174298580745?chn=ps
My understanding is that you can program the Rfwc5 with it.
I also have an old cooper usb stick. The software with it is only good for trial use because the license is non-transferable. I would be willing to loan it to you. You could get your controllers programmed and then send it back.

Thank you so much and being kind to offer the cooper stick @sainsworth. greatly appreciated. I have not had the chance to try once again as i had a rough day at work yesterday. i will be making attempts later this evening.

How far away are the zooz switches from the cooper controller? All my cooper are on the top floor in a closet and my keypads are all over the house (2 are on the same floor, and other 6 on the main floor. none in the suite) If need i can remove the ones on the main floor and program them near by and then reinstall them to their location) the furthest KP is the main floor about 40 ft away from the hub but 15 feet away from another cooper.

The big concern with the distance from the cooper to the zoom switches. I thinking the association may not work with more than one hop. You may want to attach the RFWC5 to an old extension cord and move it close the the zooz switches to see if that works.

i have tried to program on by my zooz switches, which is only 5-7 feet away. i was able to get only button 2 to work that all… here are my logs from moving the device to correct DH and then adding device to association and programming to button pressed … please advise

i have tired everything that i thought would work; however had no success. at the end, one thing i have noticed, only 1 button that worked, the device is marked under “Type” as “Z-wave Generic device” where as every other device is marked a “secured”. find attached image for details… im so tired, going to bed; hoping for your further guidance to get these going soon. thanks again
