Can't update firmware on V2 hub - no z-wave, zigbee, etc functionality

I understand your frustration. This happens for V2 hubs; they have not been manufactured for over 7 years, so that’s why there’s no official alternative for replacement.
You can get a V3 (Aeotec 2018) or one of the new hubs (V4). The one announced here: Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 - Coming Soon to Samsung.com.
The first (V3) might experience something similar due to some certificate changes, but blocking the port has helped many users; only those who can’t block the port had to replace it, but there’s a process for it described here: Troubleshooting SmartThings Hub 2018 and Aeotec Hub

I have the option of getting the Smartthings wifi version. ET-WV525. Will I have the same issue?

Not the same but we have received several reports about them not being able to connect or enable the hub part. For that issue, there are no alternatives, so, I wouldn’t suggest any of the Wi-Fi models of ET-WV520 or ET-WV525. I believe there’s another model called ET-WV530, so, that one either.

My opinion - do NOT purchase the ET-WV25. Stick with any of the following SmartThings V3, Aeaotec Smart Home Hub 1 (V3) or the new Aeotec Smarft Home Hub 2 (V4). If you purchase a SmartThings V2.. avoid any listings that say “New” or “Never Used” which indicates those hubs never received the required firmware to function properly as you have experienced.

Thanks for the info. After some questions to the seller the 525 unit was used right up until last month and it was used as a hub.

If that fails I’m going to the Aeotec or Ring

Ok, but did he already removed it from his account? I believe there’s an option to transfer devices to a new account, I don’t know exactly the path.
I ask because I’ve seen people having issues after a factory reset, even after it worked correctly the day before.

I looked up the transfer methods and it is 100% not a recommended course of action. There is no way to actually hand it off. You would create a dummy email and add the person as a member. That’s crazy.

Thanks for all the suggestions but I can’t believe that you would recommend this over a reset. I wanted Smartthings to take control of my z-wave Thermostat without having to replace it and add it to my already extensive Smartthings wifi controlled devices and appliances but this seems so complicated and onerous.

If I have to spend over $150 for a new hub just for the Thermostat I might as well buy a new Thermostat that is wifi controlled. Or buy the Ring station which is a lot more affordable than any new Smartthings hub device out there.

Thanks for your replies regardless.

A pre-owned Hubitat hub (C5, C7, C8, C8-pro) will probably be able to control your Zwave thermostat. The other Samsung Wi-Fi devices probably not but without model numbers it’s impossible to say for sure. A search on the hubitat community might be able to give you these answers if you’re interested in going this route.
