Cannot add location to existing or to new account

I need to add a location to my ST account but it does not work, not in the iOS app and not in the advanced web interface… I only see every time “Error adding location … 401” or “a network or server error occured”.

To check if the issue was related to my account, I created a new ST account but it does not have any default location and as a result nothing is shown in the iOS app, and no location can be created. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Update - issue solved. After a few times trying earlier today, I can finally add a new location. Probably a server issue that has now been corrected.

Same issue here, today (13 Sep 2026), from Spain (EU region).

  • iOS app: after signing in with my Samsung account the app just hangs loading. Same result on home Wi-Fi and on 4G mobile data, so it’s not the network.
  • Created a second, brand-new Samsung account: exactly the same.
  • The account has no location, so the Home Assistant SmartThings integration also fails (“at least one location is required”).

I tested the API directly with a Personal Access Token that includes locations read and write scopes:

GET  https://api.smartthings.com/v1/locations  -> 200 {"items":[]}
POST https://api.smartthings.com/v1/locations -> 401 Unauthorized, empty body, no error message
     body: {"name":"Casa","countryCode":"ESP","temperatureScale":"C","locale":"es"}

Tested with two different tokens, last attempt at 17:54 UTC.

So the token authenticates fine for reading, but location creation is rejected server-side for new/empty accounts. That matches the app hanging at the onboarding step. status.smartthings.com shows everything operational.

@nayelyz could this be escalated? Happy to provide more details.

nayelyz is no longer active on the forum. Neither is itali. You need to reach out to ST Customer Support directly. Since you have app issues and can’t use it. Go to Samsung’s web site, go to Support at the bottom of the page to find other ways to reach out to them.
