# Can routines be used to replace old smart app “custom monitoring”

So basically I have a bunch of “custom monitoring rules”

Moving forward can I use routines?

Could you share some examples of what you have the smartapp doing? Routines are limited in what they can do, so they may not be able to replicate the smartapp logic if it’s complex.

Mostly notifications after a time delay

Just curious if most of the functionalty is there.

Something like below? I think the timer portion of ‘contact sensor open for X seconds’ forces it to cloud execution. Otherwise, seems to work fine.
