Is there something you need that Hello Home Actions don’t provide? They are limited option scenes. You don’t have access to all features for all devices, but you do get quite a few and you can then trigger the hello home action in different ways, including from a Minimote controller, from a virtual switch, from an IFTTT DO button (using a virtual switch), etc.
This could all change in the future, but as of March 2015 there are a few functionality differences between Shortcut Groups and Hello Home Actions I thought it would be helpful to document. Please add more if you know of them.
All of the following apply to features of the standard mobile app, not custom code.
Trigger after inaction on motion sensor: Available through SG, not available in HHA
Turn off after a specified number of minutes available in SG, not HHA
Trigger a light from a motion sensor you can do this in both, but they have different names. In a shortcut group, it is “turn on when there is motion.” In HHA, it is “turn on when things start happening” and for the HHA, it is only available if you are also changing the mode. The advantage of using in an HHA is that you can…
And meanwhile…The following topic is long, but has a lot of good discussion on how scene like functionality can be implemented in smart things:
Greetings! I’m a brand new Smartthings user, but I’ve used home automation devices for about 15 years. In the case of Smartthings, I think that’s more of a hindrance than a benefit, because it looks like Smartthings is designed very differently from any of the solutions I’ve used before.
Anyway, here’s my basic question, which for some reason I just can’t figure out: how do I set up a “scene?” I don’t know if ST calls them something else, but I’m coming from using Vera, where everything was pretty much divided into devices and scenes. This is limiting in some ways but exactly what I need in others. Most of the time, I don’t actually want my automation solution to think too much for me. Sometimes I just want to be able to hit a button and have all the lights in a room turn on to preset dim…
