Perhaps… I won’t claim to have any insider knowledge here. And I know that in the tech world things can move fast. But personally, I’ll be really surprised if Z-wave is phased out in 5 years.
The big thing here is that unlike many competing technologies (Betamax vs. VHS, BluRay-Ray vs. HD-DVD, Zip Drive vs. LS-120/SuperDisk), Zigbee and Z-wave can play together. As so many ST users demonstrate Zigbee and Z-wave networks can play nice with each other.
It’s more DVD+R vs. DVD-R… once optical drives could be made to read and write to both, it became rather meaningless one vs. the other.
I strongly suspect that the actual cost to include the z-wave radio in a hub and the software to support it are not monumental. So as long as z-wave devices are still made or still commonly available or still heavily installed in users homes, Hub manufacturers will still support it.
Again, I’m no great insider… I might be way off base. 3, 4, 5 years from now you might re-open this treat and laugh at my lack for fore-sight (at which point I’ll call you a meany-poo poo head, take my ball and go home). Only time will tell for sure.
