Anything exciting and new in smart dimmers? multifunction devices with notifications?

Ok, I’m changing my dumb switches in the hallway.

I’ve of course scoured the internet before coming here, but didn’t discover anything exciting and new. All of my switches/dimmers are Jasco-made (some GE branded, some Embrigthen, some UltraPro) Zwave devices on a ST hub v2.

I could go with the same in the hallway, but I noticed on the new Ultrapro devices I have that you can customize the LED color, but you cannot control this from the hub, only using a subtle menu button on the device itself that is only visible under the face place (right side of the switch, 60% down, for those looking). So instead of their standard blue LED, it can change now to various colors. I thought, how cool would it be if I could have certain things from the hub set this color. Like red if a door was open or something. But again, these devices do not allow for color control from the hub.

So, is there any sort of advanced dimmers out there yet that CAN do multifunctions? Change the LED from the hub, or maybe something else not obvious to me?

I’ve yet to install anything Matter, but would think if I’m venturing into new territory, Matter would be the right direction

Inovelli switches are great for this. A little pricey but not crazy and IMO good value for the additional features you get. I have a couple of switches at key locations with indicators that I mostly use for door lock and garage door status (tried and gave up on using them for laundry monitoring too).

The Zooz button controller also allows customization of the LED indicator on the panel but I think it only illuminates in response to a button press, not full-time.

Inovelli definitely has the most customizable LED. THey have z-wave, zigbee and matter over Thread models if you can find them in stock. There’s a few Matter over Wifi dimmers on the market, but they’re pretty basic. Matter over Thread dimmers are just now starting to hit the market. Eve’s came out last week and Aqara’s should be coming in the next few months.

The “CStup Edge Drivers” package allows for setting the LED color on at least some of the Jasco manufactured zwave switches.

Some Zooz switches let you change the LED color using routines. See 3rd from last option.

@derekwbeck , totally agree with Mark’s comment. I completely changed over all my switches in my home to Inovelli Blue Series. I was all Jasco/GE before I converted.

For fun we have holiday routines that change the LED bar to specific colors and actions. For example, for St. Patrick’s day we had a lot of our switches change the OFF/ON led setting to a shade of green and either fade up or down depending on if there were two or three switches in the gang box.

Another example is for all our ceiling fan switches, the LED bar does a “fast rising” notification if the fan is set to circulate air up, or visa versa if going down (that’s a manual change on the fan and routine).

The Homeseer zwave switches long had the ability to set the LED lights by routine if you used their edge driver; it’s one of their advertised features. But they stopped production of them because they said they just couldn’t compete with less expensive models and they’re pretty much out of stock everywhere. :sad_but_relieved_face:

The company has announced They expect a new model to be available by August, but no word on whether it will have the vertical row of LEDs or even whether they’ll be zwave.

So I only mention them because you will find them discussed in quite a few forum threads.

It’s too bad: they were a nice solution for this use case if you were willing to pay the price.
