Announcing ThingsThatAreSmart.wiki

Hi Dean. Thanks for your input. The site is a wiki, so everyone can edit it and is encouraged to do so. When you have a disagreement about something, the best place to discuss would be on the “Discussion” page associated with each wiki page. For the page you mentioned, that would be here - http://thingsthataresmart.wiki/index.php?title=Talk:Samsung_Shape_M7&action=edit&redlink=1 (you can create the page if it doesn’t exist).

You could also start a new topic on here to discuss that device, and tag @ule (author) and @vernondraper (user who verified that it worked).

How do we promote ThingsThatAreSmart Wiki to get more contributors?

Can our pals at SmartThings help? @Ben, @slagle, @jody.albritton, @jim, @april, @EliotSmartThings … help?

  • Perhaps a SmartThings blog entry?
  • Twitter (a Twitter just for ThingsThatAreSmart? … social networking!!!).
  • Facebook
  • Pinned post?

There’s some excellent material on the site, and I wish I could focus and write more (frankly… I find it hard to switch between Markup and Wiki-language and HTML … grrrrr!!!), but still… the easiest answer are more contributors and some key ones that will organize and edit when necessary.

Otherwise… This wiki will go stale like other attempts have. :crying_cat_face:

A SmartThings blog entry would be awesome! It seems like a win-win for Samsung/SmartThings and the users. SmartThings gets to show off how dedicated and helpful its users are, and users get more help.

I like the idea of promoting on Twitter. I just setup https://twitter.com/TTASmart. I’ll try, but I’m not sure that I’ll have the time to post much there.

How many different editors/contributors? Number of contributions per editor on average?

The easiest stat to see is users active in the last 30 days. There are 9 of us. By far, the most active contributor is @yvesracine, with 298 edits in the last 30 days. Check out any of the pages for his devices/apps (ex. http://thingsthataresmart.wiki/index.php?title=My_Ecobee_Device) for some really nice documentation!

Is your plan for this page… http://thingsthataresmart.wiki/index.php?title=Category:Officially_supported_devices
to list all device types and their features or is it just to give an overall description?

There are a bunch of device types per device so it can be difficult determining which to use.

I think this page would benefit from showing devices and a description of the various device types.

The idea there would be to show the device, show what the interface looks like and what functionality it has. If there is an unofficial device type(s) with more or different functionality, we could add a link to a page in the unofficial category.

I have another post out in the community looking for device types for the Aeon Smart Energy Switch. I’ve found several linked throughout various other threads.

I’m thinking something like the following since some devices have both official and unofficial types.

or break out the current Device Type listing into Official and Unofficial so a link and description of each can quickly be reviewed.

I like the idea of linking to unofficial device types from the official one if there is a benefit of the unofficial one. I also like keeping the official devices clearly identified, as some users may prefer to use only officially supported devices in their smart home.

I hope that you can share what you find on a new page for the Aeon Smart Energy Switch. Everyone can edit the wiki.

I’ll put a page together for the CT100 thermostat with an idea of what may be useful to see.
I’ll use that since it’s a good example of the different types.

I’ve created an entry with screenshots showing both the ST type and a user contributed type.

If the devs add to the wiki, it could become the go to resource since while the openness of ST is great, finding the different types can be a daunting task.

I like this a lot. I would also add a link in the wiki article back to the specific author topic in the community-created device type section of the forum if there is one, since that then gives people a place to ask questions of the author or make suggestions.

That’s one of the issues I’m trying to take care of with this. The device types I’ve come across aren’t from a thread that was started by the author.

In the case of the CT100 type, it was a reply to a request in this thread and the title doesn’t give a clue that this works with the CT100. It’s the second post in the thread so it’s the closest I’ve seen.

I found a device type for another one that was a response to a discussion but it was buried way down in a thread.

Another type I’ve found was in response to a few different threads so it’s mentioned in several places.

While it’s nice that people create code and post them all over the place, it makes it really hard to find that type that seems to do what you are looking for.

I guess in these cases, there could be a link to where the type was found, but it may be a thread that the author isn’t watching.

What would also help would be if there was some tips for publishing code. ie: descriptive comments in the code, a link on the wiki, a separate thread announcing the type, etc.

Due to problems with spam on the wiki, I’ve had to enable manual account confirmation until we find a better way to fight the spam. When you request an account, I will need to manually confirm it, so it may take some time. If anyone has experience fighting spam on MediaWiki, please send me a PM with your tips.

@obycode, it looks like the wiki needs an PHP upgrade.

Regards.

Thanks Yves. Yes, that was pointed out to me yesterday. Still not sure what is going on because that server is running a higher version of PHP than what is required, so something strange is happening. Hopefully we’ll get it figured out soon. If anyone has any ideas of things to check, let me know.

The wiki is back up now. Apologies for the downtime.

And then here, in the CoRE section are detailed examples of use cases. If you would like to have one of your piston creations on the page for others to enjoy just send a pm to myself or @Whippm in the first you see on the page and we will get it uploaded asap.
