A New Enhanced SmartThings API Experience

I think thats the place most people are moving over to. I have been with smarthings a long time and I remmebr when hubutat came out and this place cleared out a bit but now sadly this fourm is becoming unrecognizable. This was once a great community but samsung is slowly killing it…they just need to rememebr one thing…they aren’t apple!!!

One thing that changed a lot is the Home Assistant learning curve. AI has pretty much eliminated the need to become a YAML/Jinja expert just to get something working. Describe what you want, paste in what you have and you can usually get there pretty quickly.

Kind of ironic that AI may end up being one of the things that makes Home Assistant accessible enough to accelerate people leaving the “easier” platforms.

AI has definitely helped me with Home Assistant, but I worry that I wouldn’t be able to reconstruct it easily if it ever failed catastrophically. One doesn’t really understand what they are doing when they cut and paste code.

Wise words my friend… HA and it´s integrations has a tendency to break down pretty easily. If you don´t read and understand release announcements when you hit that update button, it might not even start without the proper preparatory measures in which case AI is pretty much useless.

Has anyone tried Home-Assistant-Matter-Hub to sync home assistant helpers to smartthings local hub? AI suggested it as an alternative, I will try it…

Chiming in here to voice my dissatisfaction with this change and frankly my experience with my rather expensive Samsung TV as a whole. I’m already a home assistant user but had to use the smartthings API in order to be able to have home assistant switch directly to a specific HDMI port since that functionality isn’t exposed on the local API. This was already very annoying (if my internet goes down I can’t switch the port any more…) but I definitely won’t be paying Samsung $5 for this privilege.

Between this, ads in my TV interface that I have to block, absurd amounts of content recognition and telemetry (aka spying), and frankly just a poor software experience as a whole (CEC that breaks all the time which impacts me even when using a TV box to avoid the crappy built in interface) I’m pretty unhappy with my purchase and won’t be repeating the mistake of purchasing a Samsung next time I upgrade. It’s a shame because you guys make great displays but I just can’t stomach the rest. Make a TV that respects your customers and I’ll reconsider.

Yes I have used Home Assistant Matter Hub for months.

And it works good to bring Home Assistant devices into SmartThings. Not all devices are compatible.

But you can NOT use it to bring SmartThings devices into Home Assistant. You need to use the API integration which will result in the $5 monthly fee.

I’m using MatterBridge to share HA devices back with ST where needed. Works fine. A few devices need some entity filters so they show up correctly on the ST side but otherwise it’s flawless.

You can now easily add your Samsung Appliances locally to Home Assistant without using the SmartThings API. You will need to install the LocalThings integration in Home Assistant.

Today there was Major update to the LocalThings integration. All you need is the IP address. Keys are no longer required.

This allowed me to get my last SmartThings device (a dishwasher) at my primary location into Home Assistant without using the SmartThings API.

Wow even Tesla gives you a $10 credit each month for personal use of their API…

Samsung really thinks people will pay them $5 a month for API access for such bandwidth intensive tasks as “getting a a notice confirming that the dry cycle of the $2,000 washer/dryer they bought didn’t fully dry their socks on the first try.”

That will be the last Samsung product I buy

Has anyone heard anything more specific? Is SmartThings pulling the plug in 5 days or is it a wait and see?
A disappointing lack of communication from SmartThings in my humble opinion.

Nothing at all. I still have the same API Access app (with no active users or indeed useful function) that earned me a targeted email back when the story broke, so I rather feel I should have heard something if there was anything to hear.

I was hoping for something better but not expecting it.

I have not heard anything since a July 20th email I received. I have made a lot of changes since then hoping to avoid the fee.

If they wanted our money you think they would have put on place a system where people could pay.

Are you surprised?

So, tomorrow is Oct. 1, and Samsung still has not told us how this is going to work or how to pay for those interested.

So, will things stop working tomorrow?

My ST integration connection to Home Assistant is still working. For Now.
The Google Nest Thermostat 3rd Gen we have is not supported via this route into HA, luckily I have a Starling Hub which integrates everything from Google Home (including Nest Thermostat, Speakers and Nest Protects) into Apple Home and there is a Home Assistant integration for Starling Hub so mostly everything is integrated into Home Assistant, twice, at the moment.
If the HA ST integration stops working I will still have ST devices connected to Google Home, connected to Starling Hub, connected to Apple Home and Home Assistant.
I have integrated all of my Matter, WiFi and Thread devices to HA. I would prefer to avoid migrating zigbee devices and I don’t have a zwave dongle for HA so will keep ST for those devices.

If using the Google Nest linked service then it never will be shared with other outside platforms. Google Nest does not allow their devices to be shared from their SmartThings cloud-to-cloud integration.

Note to other users. The Starling Hub is no longer available to purchase. The company still maintains the hub but who knows how long they can maintain their cloud services.

I find it a little ironic that the service integration that makes ST devices available in Google is an API_ONLY app like those that have ST rattling the collection tin under our noses

It is actually a USER level access one rather than the LOCATION level the oiks get.

I feel confident in saying that Google have more money than me. I’d even go as far as saying more than twice as much.

Mind you I am not complaining. We use Google Home, via Android, far more for smart home control than the SmartThings app. So don’t get any ideas, ST and Google.
