$49 All-New Echo Dot (2nd Generation) Pre-Order live - Oct 20th release

Two colors are now available: Black and white.

Changes from first gen I have been able to identify:

  • The new dot is smaller. Same 3.3" diameter but is 1.3" tall vs 1.5" tall
  • Directional mic holes are slashes instead of tiny circles
  • Volume buttons replaced the volume slider around the top
  • 5.7 oz vs 8.8 oz so slightly lighter likely due to smaller height
  • Comes with 90 day warranty vs first gen had 1 year
  • No more power indicator light on the back
  • Both have a 7-microphone array so at least they didn’t change that
  • Side material appears to have a glossy finish now
  • No longer includes the 3.5 mm audio cable (4 ft.)

Cool!

Wait…ACK…no top dial, just + / - buttons!
I don’t know if I like that yet.
Still half off the old price.
Hmm…I can listen to music while playing hockey.
I can’t make up my mind! Arrrrg!

Looks like some good voice improvements coming to it and the existing Echo.

I just dug through the new and old listing to try and find all the differences [quote=“ssinchak, post:1, topic:57441”]

From the verge article:

Amazon has also built a new Echo Spatial Perception technology into the Dot. It’s designed to detect multiple instances of the Echo or Dot in use in a home, so that not every device responds to voice recognition.

I guess you need that if they are trying to sell you 12 packs…

Nice job, was just trying to figure that out for myself…

The 6 pack only makes sense if they have a whole house audio solution. I have an echo and a dot and that is my one gripe. I thought possibly with the sonos announcement a few weeks back this meant that the echo devices would gain this functionality, but as of yet no press release. Don’t get me wrong the echo and dot perform flawlessly and I use them daily with home automation, shopping lists and music and I would recommend anyone that doesn’t have one to jump on board.

It would be nice if I could say, “Alexa, play music on Kitchen echo.”

Just ordered one in white for my new playroom which has white decor all over. That gives me 4 for the house (Echo, 3 Dots). Just enough so I will lose maximum value when I sell them because Google Home will be cooler haha! (JK, but I know I might be tempted one day).

On another note, interesting that they are trying to package them with Bose speakers even though they recently announced a partnership with Sonos as well. Sounds like they aren’t playing favorites.

The six pack only applicable to UK

Take a look at this for details on how to get 6 pack: https://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=15284854011

They offered this to me in the US.

Edit: I just tested this and it worked when I entered the promo code DOT6PACK it brought the total down to 249.95 + tax.

we’ll need a new command “Alexa, SILENCE!” to turn off all the dots in the house.

You can mix and match the white and black dots in the six pack too.

I am going to be really pissed if my Echo and my 1st gen Dot’s need to be replaced so they can all work together. That is just lame considering the original Dot’s came out 8 months ago.

Thanks! I got it right

The article on the Verge says the existing Echo and Gen 1 Dot will get the new tech voice recog too. I think all will work together.
