20 AMP light switches and outlets (2020 Update in Post 24)

I looks like this has been a while, but I’ve recently started embarking on a plan to strengthen my z-wave network. I am wondering if there are any new options on the 20 Amp front since the vast majority of my outlets are 20 Amp GFCI

However codes state that you cannot put a 15A receptacle on a 20A breaker. it must be protected up and downstream.

I am in the same place. 15 amps will not cut it, I need a 20 amp switch. I would prefer Bluetooth or Wi-FI. I looked all over, and other than the crazy expensive GE and whatever else z-wave stuff there is out there that handles 4 amps, I find nothing. There are MANY 15 amp options. There is ONE new 20 amp options from a group in HK called Yoswit - but they have ZERO track record here. Does anyone have any ideas?? THANKS!!!

2020 Update

You are responding to a thread which is two years old. Quite a few things have changed in that time, but unfortunately nothing for the better as far as solving your use case. Some of the previously existing devices are now no longer available. :disappointed_relieved:

The available choices now are the Aeotec heavy duty zwave relay, the Linear 20A zwave relay, and the GE switch that you mentioned.

Currant has a SmartThings integration for their WiFi plugins and has announced that they are working on an in wall outlet which will come in both 15 amp and 20 amp models, but it has not been released yet.

So for something available right now, the Aeotec is probably the most popular.

If you really only need 20 A, not 30 or 40, the linear will be less expensive. This is an older generation device, though, and is getting hard to find.

There is one other option but it only has partial integration. ConnectSense makes Wi-Fi devices intended for the HomeKit market. These are well engineered; I have a couple. They do make an in wall 20 amp outlet. But there’s no smartthings integration and it costs $100. The good news is you can control each of the two sockets independently, so that’s additional value. And it has energy monitoring. It’s also UL listed. :sunglasses:

You can get partial integration through Amazon echo routines. But I don’t know if that’s enough to meet your requirements.

Thank you for your help @JDRoberts! Sadly, I want an actual switch. I have seen the Aeotec but it is Z-Wave and it has no actual toggle on it. I have no Z-Wave setup yet, so that would require at least another 60+ dollars for a smartthings or some other hub. Can I use the Aeotec, even if I am willing to give up on an actual toggle, with my phone or app, WITHOUT a smart hub? TIA!

Also, I am sorry and my apologies for not following thread rules, should I have created a new one? TIA!

All zwave devices will require a hub.

Zigbee devices require a hub, but there is one built into some Echo models.

WiFi devices don’t usually require a hub, although there are some that require a bridge.

I’m sorry I missed that you were looking for a switch, most people are looking for an outlet.

The Aeotec is wired in line and you can use it with a dumb momentary switch, no problem. But that means you would need a hub, the Aeotec relay, and a dumb switch. So the cost adds up. The same thing is true for the Linear, which might fit better if you want something inside the wall.

In case anyone here has access to a 3D printer and wants to do some of their own wiring, I created a housing for the FS20Z-1. I posted it to Thingiverse, enjoy!
