Playing around with Amazon Echo (technical interface discussion)

Interesting I discovered about 5 devices in my list the other day that I never added. They had peoples names in them and I don’t even know anyone with those names so I know they were not mine. I did a forget and rediscovered and they went away.

Any chance you’ve done this @tgauchat? I can’t imagine it’d be hard, but I haven’t had a chance to play with SmartThings much since January. However I received the Echo a couple weeks ago and loving it!

I don’t have a Thermostat, so can’t test this trick.

On/Off work really well, and Dimming commands are perfect on real Hues, so I’m very confident that REST Endpoint spoofing for temperature, Hello Home, Mode, etc. will be no problem. An binary or % Command / Actuator!

The only thing this Hue Bridge emulator method can’t do is return result announcements directly through the Echo (ie, Are any doors open?) .

Is there an option somewhere to have echo automatically adjust it’s output level?
Having fun with the dang thing, but when located in a room with reasonable changes in background sound levels, I’m constantly dinking with echos output levels to hear the responses…
Given the hardware in this device, seems an option to enable output volume as a dynamic function based on ambient levels would not be difficult…

Not yet… But Echo’s firmware (whatever) is being updated frequently. I’d email support with the feature request.

I wish they published the change list. A few days ago, my Echo started having trouble hearing me. My guess is an update that adjusted the sensitivity.

My favorite Echo review headline:

“It sucks. It’s awesome. It sucks. We want two more…”

OK, well if there’s a dedicated echo support email or page link, I’m not finding it…

In the mobile App under “Help”.

Or http://echo.amazon.com which is a mirror of your app.

Didn’t even know that site existed.

Yea I don’t know why Amazon doesn’t make that clear. To be honest I expected Smart Things to have something similar when I bought it. I mean how hard can it be to have a webpage that exactly mirrors the phone app. I think Amazon got that exactly right. I like that I know I can get to the same stuff on my phone or my PC or my Mac.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with that expectation. Well… actually, I’ve always been very sure that lots of people had that expectation, either at purchase time, or an priority feature wish.

Or not… Perhaps I’m too old to be in the “mobile device generation” who always have App access.

I submitted a request for them to integrate ST. I think everyone with ST and Echo should do the same.

Looks like today’s the day - the Echo is now for sale without an invite

Number of Amazon reviews at the present time:

Echo: 19,822
Philips Hues: 1,241
SmartThings: 344

Yup… I also found that to be notable.

Of course, if anyone is in a position to fake encourage reviewers, it’s Amazon themselves.

But as an “Echo App Developer”, it’s very encouraging. There’s greater exposure and revenue potential than as an ST Dev, it seems.

is there any way to get step by step directions as i would love to do this in my home

Here are step by step instructions for getting the Echo to talk to SmartThings. It’s a little hacky and it does require a computer of some sort to run the Hue emulator. The instructions are specific to a Windows machine, but can be replicated on most OS’s. Once it is setup it is fairly stable, I haven’t had a whole lot of issues with it.

Many of you have probably already seen this, but as @coolcatiger pointed out in another topic, the Alexa Skills Kit instructions are now published openly.

The Alexa Skills Kit is a collection of APIs and tools aimed at making it easy for developers to add features to Alexa…with a few lines of code, developers should be able to integrate Alexa into existing products – or create completely new experiences within a few hours.

i’m thinking this might be combined with the new IFTTT Maker channel for a lot of quick solutions, but I haven’t looked into it.
